Are your kids glued to the TV every night and every weekend? Mine are definitely on top of the newest shows on TV. One thing I have noticed is that some of the shows my kids are now gravitating towards are more on the Tweens and Teens category. When I heard about Disney Channel’s newest series, Andi Mack, I was pretty intrigued by it and I couldn’t wait to learn more. During our recent visit to Los Angeles, we had the opportunity to sit down and preview this wonderful coming-of-age series and then chatted with its cast and creators.
So, before we continue, Disney Channel’s upcoming series “Andi Mack” premieres tonight at 8:30 PM EST. #AndiMack
Andi Mack” is a contemporary, coming-of-age story about a relatable girl who’s trying to determine where she fits in — and the many amazing ways she can live her life. Andi has been raised to live on the safe side but on her 13th birthday, she takes off the proverbial training wheels and eagerly goes headlong into her teenage years. At every twist and turn, she’s anchored by a loving albeit complicated family and her loyal best friends, Cyrus and Buffy.
I have to admit, having one pre-teen and a Tween at home has come with new lessons and challenges. Some of these lessons have been hard and some have been very informative. One thing I have learned through this process is that whenever you can take a personal experience or something you see on a TV show, take the opportunity and talk about it with them. So, what kind of message is this new TV show trying to convey those Tween and Teens watching the show? Executive Producer Michelle Manning, had this to say:
Honestly, my message is to watch TV with your parents. My goal is, I have a daughter who’s 22 and a lot of our conversations were generated by shows that we saw on television and it was just like, oh, you watch a Lifetime movie about bullying and just be, does that ever happen to you? And I think that television is a great medium for parents and kids to start a conversation. And that was my goal. Generations of a family to watch together.
As a very typical Latino family, I love it when my kids watch TV shows with many different cultural backgrounds. I want them to learn that there isn’t one “average” look out there; we might all look different but today’s issues are basically the same no matter where you came from. Knowing this, I was curious to learn what the cast had to say about this Asian-American family-centered series. Peyton Elizabeth Lee who plays “Andi Mack”, had this to say.
Definitely. I think that the fact that there are different ethnicities on the show, it just makes the show that much more relatable and exciting. And it’s very different from anything that’s on the air right now. So, I definitely think it’ll be good for people are like us and who aren’t just your average white kid to be able to see that on the screen.
Andi Mack is definitely not your average TV show, this new series brings a fresh new look into this age group lineup with a twist, I don’t want to spoil it for anyone! 🙂 The inspiration behind this show, believe it or not, happened when Executive Producer Michelle Manning was reading Jack Nickolson’s biography. I love that the show deals with many of the issues you and I dealt with when we were growing up but within today’s society. The cast is amazing, their chemistry undeniable, and the stories extremely relatable. Tune in tonight to watch the extended version of Andi Mack’s first episode on Disney Channel at 8:30/9:30 P.M. EDT. and then come back and check out all the clips below to learn more about this Must-See Show!
