Before the kids came along, hubby and I, would spontaneously jump on the car, a plane or a ship for a quick getaway. Then our eldest came along and we still found ways to go on our trips. Later, our other two kids came along and our vacation adventures slow down from many in one year to a few. However, till this day, getaways have remained in our top things to do as a family. Thankfully, living in South Florida, provides us the opportunity to still have those adventures we craved. Now a days, when we are in the need of a quick getaway, we pack the kids in the car and explore our city or head up north to the other city we love, Orlando! Florida is such a unique place to live, you certainly can enjoy what each city has to offer, from museums to amazing beaches.
Essential Tips for Family Trips

Throughout the years, our family has taken around fifteen cruise vacations and countless car trips up north. To make our trips less hectic, each family member has certain responsibilities. For example, hubby is in charge of making sure everything we need is neatly packed in our suitcases. He is also in charge of making sure our car’s essential, such as tire pressure, checking the spare tire, jumper cables, wiper and all car fluids are topped off and ready for our trip. As a mom, I am responsible for packing our hand bag with all the essentials to keep the kids entertained. This is why, throughout the years I have develop my Mommy’s Travel Survival Kit which includes:
- Coloring books and crayons to keep the boredom from kicking in and allowing hubby a safe driving space.
- Electronics and power banks, in case because your electronics should run out of battery when the kids are around, I bring extra power banks and of course, all the hand-held electronics we have available.
- Toys, toys, and more toys. I make sure our hand bag has plenty of smaller toys, such as boxed cars, card games and for our daughter, a doll or two.
- Other essentials. I also make sure that our hand bag has plenty of snacks, wet wipes, alcohol-based hand sanitizers, extra change of shirt and small-size sunblock.
Of course, a trip is not just about packing, it is about the destination. That’s why, when we go on any trip we try to develop an itinerary that everyone would enjoy. For example, if we are booking a trip with a theme park in mind, we make sure that it is age appropriate for all the kids. Another essential family tip trip, we have learned is that you don’t have to spent a ton of money on entertaining the kids. For example, in the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale areas there are tons of things to do with the kids for free. The same goes for the Orlando area, from enjoying downtown Disney to visiting the All-Star resorts and even watching the Electric Parade happening at Seven Seas Lagoon and Bay Lake.
If you are looking for another fun and quick way to have family getaway is by booking one of the many, unlimited options of hotels available in Florida. Most of these hotels have mini water parks that the kids would enjoy and you and your family can getaway for the weekend. The best part is that this kind of getaway can be done on a budget, you can gather all the necessary groceries you will need for the weekend and enjoy the Florida sun.
I am thrilled to take the kids in our mini adventures, even if we are on a budget. Walmart always find a way of making our family vacations possible. We shop all our vacation essentials and even use the Walmart Family Mobile service. Did you know that Walmart Family Mobile service is $29.88/month (for the first line) Unlimited Talk, Text & Data service plan which includes up to 1G of 4G LTE data? Yes, it is true. Their service is not only reliable, but it helps me keep the kiddos entertained while on the go! Which actually is my number #1 Essential Tips for Family Trips!
