Exclusive Interview with Fred Savage Host of ABC’s Child Support
I was provided an all-expense paid trip to L.A to attend the Star Wars: The Last Jedi press junket. No additional compensation was received.
What’s your earliest memory of Fred Savage? Maybe your answer is umm, he played Kevin Arnold in the American television series The Wonder Years? If that is your answer, well that’s mine also. But what has Fred Savage been up to since The Wonder Years ended its run in 1993? Well, since then Fred Savage has been a television director, producer and he has also lent his voice to several animated series. If that wasn’t enough, we can add guest co-host and now, game show host. Last month, during our Star Wars: The Last Jedi press trip, we were invited to screen ABC’s newest game show entitled Child Support, which by the way premieres tonight at 8:00 PM EST. But that wasn’t all, we also had the opportunity to sit down and chat with its host, Fred Savage himself.
“Child Support” premieres FRIDAY, JAN. 5 (8:00-9:00 p.m. EST), on The ABC Television Network. (ABC/Eric Liebowitz)
ABC’s Child Support
If you are thinking, Child Support a TV game show? Well, let’s explore its premise. Child Support features adult contestants and priceless interactions between funnyman Ricky Gervais and a group of 5 kids who say the most unpredictable things. Contestants are asked to answer 10 questions correctly to earn the top prize. If they answer incorrectly, the contestants have a chance to be saved by the 5 kids who have been asked the same question by Gervais. Simple, right? Well, even Fred Savage himself was concern that some audience wouldn’t understand the play-on-words of its title. And yes, I am one of them, but trust me once you see the show, you will immediately understand it and think, ah-ha that’s totally clever! 🙂
Exclusive Interview with Fred Savage
After having seen two episodes of this new TV game show, I can see how entertaining it will be for the entire family. One of my favorite aspects of Child Support are kids themselves. They are hilariously funny, entertaining, and oh, so smart. And as Fred told us, “You’ll see the same kids again and again which I think is great. Because you kind of get to know these kids a little bit.”
Another aspect I love is that if the contestant answers 10 questions, which are simple yet complex in their own right, correctly they can win the ultimate prize of $200,000. This alone got us wondering if Fred could let us in on a little behind the scenes secret. From the contestants that have won, has any contestant taken the big prize yet? Of course, Fred was such a great host and didn’t wanna spoil that surprise for us. But that’s cool, we will be watching to find out the answer to that question.
So, if you are wondering if Fred gets the questions or the answers beforehand, the answer is no, he doesn’t. Which got us wondering if there has been an experience or a question that has stood out for him thus far. The answer to that question is, there is an M.I.T question on the show and a contestant that goes way down the road and who’s fate relies on the support of the kids. So, look out for those!
Finally, two more things came to mind when Fred Savage chatted with us. One, does he see himself hosting more TV game shows and two, has Fred filmed with funnyman and executive producer Ricky Gervais? The answer to the first question is “I think America will tell me if I have a future in this or not. But it definitely has opened me up to doing it again.”
And the answer to the second question is no but Fred had this to say about Ricky: “We talked on the phone a few times. During when I first came aboard, we spoke on the phone and then we talked before I started shooting and we talked afterwards. We’ve talked a few times over the phone, but I haven’t met him actually, but he was really great. I had never done anything like this and he was good with some words of encouragement.” Remember to tune in tonight and then come back and let us know how much your family loved Child Support.
