In our recent trip to San Francisco, we had the opportunity to seat down and chat with Kyle MacLanchlan and Kaitlyn Dias about their characters in Disney*Pixar animated hit film, Inside Out. You might be familiar with Kyle MacLanchlan work from such TV hits as Sex in the City, Desperate House Wives, or Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and from the big screen in the live action film version of The Flintstones. In Inside Out, Kyle lends his voice to Ryle’s Dad. While you might not know Kaitlyn Dias, this bright young lady is the voice behind Riley from Inside Out. Kaitlyn is now 16 years old, but began working on the film when she was just 11 years old. Can you imagine that? As we mature our voices change and this happened to Kaitlyn through the time she worked in the movie. Riley’s voice, voiced by Kaitlyn, is a combination of her own 11-year old voice and a more high pitched voice she had to use to continue sounding as an 11-year old. Phew, so much work that goes behind the scenes!

*Exclusive* Interview with Kyle MacLachlan (Riley’s Dad) and Kaitlyn Dias (Riley) from Inside Out
#InsideOutBloggers
Inside Out is such a great family movie and after seeing the film with the kiddos, they had lots of questions about the emotions. What was Kyle’s 7-year old son reaction to the movie? Kyle had this to say about that “The movie has some complexity to it, but the fact that my son was with it the whole way and asking the right questions. Meant, he got the story, which I think it is a good sign. He recognizes the emotion and identify with it and is able to discern who is sort of guiding his attitude at the time.“
Now that Kyle can add voice acting to his resume, does he want to continue doing it? Kyle had this to say “Yes, I would love to. It is a different experience altogether, because I found the focus to be very much more in my head, because we didn’t always necessarily voicing to a scene or an existing scene and try and match dialogue. It’s kind of from the beginning where in my mind, I’m kind of running whatever part of the film I think it’s going to be or how I might do it.“
For Kaitlyn, voice acting was a new experience, it was actually her first time doing voice acting. She was actually brought in as a scratch voice at the age of 11 and began voicing Riley little by little for the next four years. After having worked on the movie for four years, did it changed Kaitlyn’s perspective and views on emotions? Kaitlyn had this to say “A little bit, yes. The concept of it definitely gets inside your head, especially after watching it. It was just like, oh, Joy must be at the controls now or Anger must be at the controls now. And it sort of gets into the way you think about your own thoughts.“
Speaking of emotions, what is Kaitlyn’s favorite emotion from the movie? She had this to say “I’m gonna have to go with Anger, ’cause he has hilarious facial expressions. Plus the fact that he explodes and you make s’mores off of him.“
Thanks to Kyle MacLachlan and Kaitlyn Dias for taking the time to answer our questions and for those parents out there wondering what Kyle and Kaitlyn want you to take away from the movie they had this to say.
Kyle: “When I saw the film, I found it incredibly emotional, surprisingly emotional. And I was moved a couple times. As an adult, you’re revisiting territory that you aren’t gonna be able to experience, except in a movie like this. ‘Cause you don’t want to go back into those worlds, because they’re very painful and you recognize that in order for your child to grow, there are painful things they’re gonna have to go through. And I think the acceptance of that and realizing that ultimately the thing that’s gonna make it easier is just to have to be present as a family.“
Kaitlyn: “I’d just say to the parents watching this, make sure that you try and make sure that you can recognize when your own child’s going through this so that you can make sure that you’re there for them and make sure that they know that you are supporting them.“
