Movie Description:
A devoted high school teacher risks life and limb as a mixed-martial-arts fighter in order to rescue his school’s music program from the cutting block in this action comedy from director Frank Coraci (The Wedding Singer, Click). Back in his prime, Scott Voss (Kevin James) was a collegiate wrestler with some fairly impressive moves. Now, at 42, he teaches biology at troubled Wilkinson High School. Mr. Voss has begun to grow deeply indifferent in his role as an educator when a troubling announcement stirs him to action. Effective immediately, Wilkinson High will be eliminating all extracurricular activities. Suddenly, the most apathetic teacher on the staff has a reason to get involved. But how is a typical high school teacher like Mr. Voss supposed to raise the $48,000 needed to save the music program from going belly up? Upon learning that some MMA fighters earn $10,000 just for stepping into the ring, Mr. Voss vows to get back in shape, and subject himself to a series of brutal beatings so his students won’t have to. Here Comes the Boom is a heartwarming and inspirational comedy.
The strong point of the movie is the heart felt characters and the chemistry among the actors. I absolutely fell in love with Marty (played by Henry Winkler) as the music teacher. The theater erupted into laughter just by looking at Miguel (Shelly Desai) a citizenship student. Another great character was Niko (Played by Bas Rutten) just because it was hilarious to hear him singing Faithfully and his dancing outbursts. Lastly check out Malia (played by Charice), she is the student that keeps us connected to the school. What an awesome talent. Like I said the characters make the movie great.
The downside is that the movie is as predictable as they come. There is nothing that we haven’t seen before. In a brighter tone you get exactly what you expected. I just wish the good guy would of have lost at the end, that would of have made an interesting and more realistic turn of events. I mean Rocky lost in the first movie and now it is a classic. I just found really hard to see Kevin James winning at the UFC.
Overall this is a great inspirational comedy that feed on the popular topic of the problems in education and the economy.
I give it 4 out of 5 stars.
