Last Friday, I had the amazing opportunity to interview Selena Gomez, who lends her voice to Mavis in the upcoming Hotel Transylvania 2. Today, I want to share what we learned about Mavis, Selena herself, about her heritage, and what’s up next. Here we go, all the questions below were asked by the attending mommies and their little interviewers, enjoy! 🙂

Hotel Transylvania 2: An Exclusive Interview with Selena Gomez AKA Mavis

The first question was asked by one of the little interviewers and it was “when did you started acting?“ To this Selena Gomez responded: “I was 7 years old. My mom did a lot of theater and I just loved watching. My mom is my hero and I admired her, she is incredible. I asked if I could do it and I did it.”

The second question was also asked by one of the little interviewers and it was “how long did it take to voice Mavis in the new Hotel Transylvania 2?“ To this Selena Gomez had to say “The first one was a little harder because we were trying to figure out what made Mavis. This is the second one, so collectively a week.”

Our little interviewers had so many questions for Selena Gomez and the third question was also asked by one of them. “Do you like acting or singing more?“ To this Selena Gomez replied “This is such a hard question. I really love both, that’s the thing. I will have to say when I become older, marriage status, which we won’t talk about that right now. I think that’s when I will lean toward acting a little more.”

Our little interviewers continued by asking Selena Gomez the following question, “Was it fun shooting the movie?“ To this Selena Gomez had to say: “Yeah, it was a lot of fun! I am the only girl in the movie. So, I have to be honest, it was kind of lonely, not having some of the woman. Adam Sandler and Adam Sandberg, they are so fun to be around, they crack me up.”

The next question came from one of the mommies, she asked “There were things in the movie, what was your favorite part of the movie?“ To this Selena Gomez had to say: “I honestly loved that we focused on, even though the movie is about monsters. The movie is about accepting people’s differences. I thought it was extremely important that no matter where you come from you are accepted.”

The next question also came from one of the mommies, “how was it revisiting this role now since Mavis is grown up and married?“ To this Selena had to say: “This was such a fun project for me to be a part of. Working as part of the Disney channel for so long, a part of me didn’t wanted to leave that. Because I love having the little and that means so much to me. Also at the same time trying to balance becoming a young woman. This has been so much fun to be able to mess with that generation.”

Another question that came from the little reviewers was “you have awesome friends. What quality in friends do you look for?“ To this Selena Gomez had to say, “I like friends that are REAL. If I make a mistake or if I hurt someone’s feelings. My friends will come up to me and they will tell me the truth. I like that, I like to have people who are honest with me and make me a better person. You have to be aware of who you are around, I think that’s very important.”

Another mommy had the opportunity to ask Selena Gomez about monsters, “Were you afraid of monsters and who is your favorite monster?“ To this Selena Gomez had to say: “I am partial to Drac, but I do really like the mummy. When I was younger, I was afraid of dolls. I remember I saw Chucky and I was scar.”

The next question came from Twitter and it was “How much Mavis are you in real life?“ To this Selena Gomez had to say: “Mavis is for sure much cooler than me. She has cooler abilities. But, I do have to say that she is very fun, really loving and she took a chance from falling in love with Johnny. I liked that because she was fearless!”

Another question by one of our little interviewers was “Which movie did you like better? The first one or the second one?“ Selena Gomez had this to say: “The 2nd one. The first one has a special place in my heart for sure. But the second one has a real family feel and I liked that!”

I got to ask Selena Gomez this question: “Did you get to work with Drac? and if, so where you cracking up all the time?“ Selena Gomez responded: “Yes, I did. Adam is very involved. Adam is a producer, so he got to come in to a few of the recording sections. Some of them actually do improv. It is actually incredible to see their interpretation, because you can read it one way and but when you see other’s take on it is awesome.”

The next question was from another mommy “How many recording sessions did you guys do where you were actually together?“ To this Selena had to say: “I think there were only a total of two sessions, due to everyone’s schedule. There were several days collectively throughout.”

The next question was all about Selena, “So what is next for you?“ Which she responded: “My album Revival comes out October 9th which I am very excited about because it is an extremely personal record.”

The next question is all about the next generation, “what advice would you give to girls who are interested in acting?“ To this Selena Gomez had to say: “I would say this… The more I visit schools and children, the first thing they say is that they want to be famous. And for me, I always tell girls that there is a difference between being famous and successful. Because it requires a lot of dedication and it is hard work. People are going to be mean. I have a different outlook and I have a huge amount of respect for it. So, don’t think that fame is what you want.”

Selena also talked about how was playing the role of a mom and what she learned. “The older I get, the more I find myself calling my mom and thanking her. Now, I understand, I couldn’t imagine having the responsibility of another human being.” She also spoke about how it feels to be an actor, “Acting, makes me feel extremely blessed. It is like reaching the very top of a roller coaster.”

And since we are so close to Halloween, she also spoke about her favorite Halloween costume. She said “I still dress up and it doesn’t have to be Halloween. My mom used to be a make up artist,  I used to dressed up like a wicked witch kind of. So, my mom gave a hair style and gave me cat eyes and I was like 6 years old and it was fun.”

Selena also spoke about her biggest fear, she had to say that “loosing my family, but since that is a deep question. I don’t like of spiders.” And in general, she also spoke about her favorite song. She said that currently, “my favorite song is Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Judy Garland.”

To close our interview with Selena Gomez, we couldn’t let her go without asking her a few questions about her Latina heritage. Selena had to say that “I never saw myself as facing any sort of challenges due to my heritage, but when then I realize that it affect people that way. And when I had moms come up to me and tell me that “my girls can reach anything they want to reach because of you.” I was overwhelmed by it because I didn’t realize that responsibility but the fact that I get to be a voice for all Latinas, is the best feeling. I think it is extremely important.” And finally, what does Selena want her Latina fans to take away from her characters. She had to say “Mavis is spunky and fearless, I learn from that and I want young women to take that confidence with them.”

Hotel Transylvania 2 Synopsis:

The Drac pack is back for an all-new monster comedy adventure in Sony Pictures Animation’s Hotel Transylvania 2! Everything seems to be changing for the better at HotelTransylvania… Dracula’s rigid monster-only hotel policy has finally relaxed, opening up its doors to human guests. But behind closed coffins, Drac is worried that his adorable half-human, half-vampire grandson, Dennis, isn’t showing signs of being a vampire. So while Mavis is busy visiting her human in-laws with Johnny – and in for a major cultural shock of her own – “Vampa” Drac enlists his friends Frank, Murray, Wayne and Griffin to put Dennis through a “monster-in-training” boot camp. But little do they know that Drac’s grumpy and very old, old, old school dad Vlad is about to pay a family visit to the hotel. And when Vlad finds out that his great-grandson is not a pure blood – and humans are now welcome at Hotel Transylvania – things are going to get batty!
