I really liked this movie even though its main theme was taking Iron Man out of his armor, and for the most part of the movie Iron Man is armorless. Still the movie has enough action and Robert Downey Jr. to make it entertaining. I believe the success of this movie must be attributed to the godly combination of Robert Downey Jr. and director Shane Black.
First Robert Downey Jr. has nailed the character perfectly through his charm and crazy mouth. On this movie we have a post Avengers more mature and edgy Tony Stark. The alien encounters of Avengers have left Tony with anxiety disorders which are affecting his relationship with Pepper. So he deals with it by doing what Tony Stark does, building Armors. The movie kicks into gear when AIM lead by the Mandarin (a Bin Laden type of terrorist) hurts Happy Hogan in a terrorist attack and Tony publicly vows justice. His public stunt leads to the destruction of his Malibu home and he being left armor less and alone. From this point on it is all about Tony, his wits and his brain.
Shane Black’s claim to fame was Lethal Weapon. He brings that action comedy element, fast talking to the movie which works great since the movie lacks slow moments. It is entertaining when the high action is on and equally entertaining with the dialogues. Aparently the fact that he and Downey Jr. had worked previously in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang worked for their advantage.
Comic fans will have a split opinion on this incarnation of the Mandarin since it is very different from the comic. Still it works awesome with the movie and I must say that Ben Kingsley is the scene stealer of the movie. Another thing comic book fans will enjoy is the array of different armors he uses in this movie.
Over all it is a must see and I must admit I am more excited about this movie after I saw it than before. Usually by the third (or fourth if you count Avengers) installment of a movie franchises lose their momentum, but in this case it actually got a shoot of adrenaline.
