Summer is just around the corner and for most of us, this season brings us to the question: “How are we going to keep the kids entertained and avoid boredom?” Yes, I know. For some of us, summer day or sleep-away camps are the best solutions to this dilemma. However, for us, these camps are not the right solution and why? Well, that’s quite simple. Not only do we like to spend time with our kids creating memories all year round, we like to provide them with the liberty to learn and explore the world outside of the classroom setting.
My Kids’ Top Favorite Things To Do
So, I ask you, what are some of your kids’ favorite things to do? Well, if you are here today, I am sure you are looking for additional ideas on how to keep your kiddos entertained all year long, not just during the summer season. So, let’s explore some of my kid’s top favorite things to do and help you find new ways to entertain your kids and maybe even nix boredom in the bud once and for all. 🙂
So, first things first. I don’t know about your kids, but once boredom sets in all heck breaks loose. So, my number one goal is to avoid letting them get bored. Kids are expected to behave, reach, and progress at given standardized rates. With so much pressure between school progress and their extracurricular activities, it is hard for them to just be kids. So, my solution is when the school year ends, encourage them just to be free!
Free independent play activities!
We accomplish this by keeping at hand a shelf (yes, a dedicated shelf, just for them) with the following materials: coloring books, color pencils, mini puzzles, mini action figures, stickers, scissors, scrap paper, and glue. This way, they are encouraged to free independent play, plus it’s an activity that they can do all year long, not just when school is in recess. Besides keeping them busy, this is already one of my kids’ top favorite thing to do, so I do take advantage and incorporate their favorite things. By the way, we also keep a vast variety of game boards that they can choose to play together or independently.
Now, you might be thinking, coloring and drawing are some of my kids’ favorite things to do as well, but can they be kept entertained like this all year long? Well, the answer is no. Just like adults, kids need a variety of activities to keep them entertained. The good thing about living in South Florida is that we can have tons of outdoor entertainment almost 365 days a year. So, here are some more of my kids’ favorite things to do.
Entertaining activities through the season!
In the summer, they love to go to the beach or spend a day at the pool. All year long: besides the pool or the beach, among their favorite things to do is play outside with bubbles, toss frisbees in our yard, pick wildflowers from around the neighborhood, fly a kite at the local park, and oh, we do take advantage of free days at our local museums and national parks. We love free days because they are available throughout the year and besides, we make a day of it. Not only do we get to explore our city, we also get to reinforce what they have learned or will learn at school.
So, let’s be realistic. The activities mentioned above are nice, right? But if your kids are anything like mine, they want to explore outside their “normal” environment. Yes, I am proud to say that my kids have inherited our spirit of adventure, so my kids’ ultimate favorite thing to do is to plan our next adventure. You read that correctly, we love to plan short and long-term adventures aka vacations.
Plan Your Next Adventure!
Every year, we plan short-term and long-term adventures, and yes they are involved in very step of the way. For example, earlier this year, as per their request. We decided to pack up our car and head up north for a quick weekend getaway. But that’s not all. Later this year we are headed back to Central America where we have planned a ton of activities, like visiting two active volcanoes. Doesn’t that sound the like a top favorite thing to do?
It doesn’t matter if you have an amazing adventure ahead if you have to be stuck in a car or on a plane. So, what happens when you are on the go? Well, my mommy solution is to bring along the entertainment with you. Whenever we are going to travel, even if it is for 30 minutes, I pack my “mommy bag.” In this bag, we bring with us their electronics (yes, I know we aren’t alone), we bring coloring books and crayons, and tons and tons of snacks. Because I don’t know about your kids, but mine set foot in the car and they are already asking for snacks. All the snacks that come with us are always mommy, daddy, and kids approved.
