National Energy Awareness Month!
Did you know that October is National Energy Awareness Month? National Energy Awareness Month is an initiative that began in 1991, to raise awareness of the importance of sustainably managing energy resources. Because it is National Energy Awareness Month, I think it is the perfect time to talk about the importance of making our homes more energy efficient through the Fall season.
Fall Energy Efficiency Tips
As we all know cooling and/or heating our homes is the number one driver of higher energy bills. So, how do we keep our household energy efficient this fall? Here are 4 of our Fall Energy Efficiency Tips:
- Take an energy audit. An energy audit, such as FPL’s Online Home Energy Survey can help explain your household’s energy consumption, identify losses and evaluate possible improvements. The best part about taking FPL’s Online Home Energy Survey is that this tool is free to use, so take advantage of it.
- Upgrade to smart technology. Adding smart technology to your household can make a difference in your household’s energy consumption. FPL recommends adding smart thermostats and smart plugs. Smart thermostats and smart plugs are the perfect tools to remotely control your energy usage when on the go or when you are busy enjoying the outdoors. And guess what? If you own an Amazon Echo, Echo Dot or ecobee4 you can ask Alexa for FPL’s energy efficiency tips to help you save energy and money. Once you enable the FPL skill from the Alexa Skill store, just say “Alexa, open FPL” and use some of these voice commands:
- How can I lower my energy bill?
- What’s your energy-saving tip of the day?
- Go with an Energy Efficient Appliances. If you are due for any kind of appliance upgrade, take a look at energy efficient appliances. But don’t stop with your washer, fridge or stove, also upgrade your HVAC system. However, even if you cannot afford to upgrade to an energy efficient HVAC system, make sure your current system is properly maintained. Dirty filters can slow air flow, making the system work harder and therefore, wasting you more energy. One way to remember to change/check your air filter is when you receive your electric bill every month.
- Manage your energy use from the FPL mobile app. Finally, the FPL app can help you keep tabs on your accounts at all times. With this app, you can monitor your energy usage, view your projected bill, check your account summary, track the length of your billing cycle, pay your bill, and stay informed from the palm of your hand.

I’ve tried to become more environmentally friendly in the past few years. Luckily, being eco-friendly often means that I also get to save money! I appreciate your advice to make sure that our HVAC system is energy efficient since that would save so much energy and money!
