My three kids are pretty close, specially the boys, I think it is because they are only two years apart. Anyhow, when I found out that I was expecting boy number two, I was truly in heaven. Not only because I was having another little boy, but I knew that they would be such great buddies. And trust me when I say close, I mean they do all most everything together! They have gone through so many challenges and triumphs, together as well. For instant, many years ago, they both had minor surgery on the same day and within an hour of each other. As a mom, that was a scary moment, but for them it was the only way to get through it.

When my oldest began potty training it was quite easy, but when it came to staying dry through the night, it was a different story. After consulting with a specialist, who assured me that night time accidents are normal because children tend to deep sleep and are not easily awaken by their bladders, with a lots of patience and encouragement, night time accidents eventually stopped. Although, the boys are two years apart and my youngest boy fully potty trained at age 3, night time accidents have had the same pattern as my oldest boy. Along the way, we have learned a few things to raise confidence and self-esteem in our kids to help them get through this period of their lives. Things such as:

  • Limit liquids at night at least one hour before bed: They know that 30 minutes before bed, liquid should be restricted. They are allow to drink some water before bed, but not in huge amounts.
  • Use potty just before bed: Our kids know that just before bed, they must potty to help reduce waking up in the middle of the night and night time accidents. We do remind them every night.
  • Keep them warm at night: If your child is cold, due to removing their blankets, it may cause night time accidents. Our kids wear socks, long sleeves and long pants pajamas to bed to help keep them warm through the night.
  • Use real underpants: Once your child is fully potty trained, you don’t want to revert to using diapers. You need to provide your child with a comfort zone and wearing real underpants. This will allow your child to avoid guilt and embarrassment.
  • Lastly, be PATIENT and UNDERSTANDING: Remember, to praise your child when he/she goes through the night without wetting the bed. Although, bed-wetting might be frustrating for you, it is more frustrating for your child. Also, remember that bed-wetting doesn’t pose any health risks to your child, however, it may cause loss of opportunities for social engagement. By been patient and understanding your child will become more confident and his/hers self-esteem will be boosted.

I struggled with wetting the bed until I was 9 and I remember the embarrassment it caused me. My oldest son is 5 and still wets the bed every few nights a week. We were doing pull-ups until a few weeks ago when I saw TruFits at the store. He loves that they look like his big boy undies! And we’ve definitely been following the advice of limiting liquids and pottying right before bed and it seems to be helping. I had never heard the staying warm though! Great idea!
