Feeling the summer pinch? Put these useful Summer Energy Savings Tips to use and start putting more money in your pocket.
Seriously you guys, Florida’s weather is crazy hot this summer and around here, summer is just getting started. Before we continue, let me just say something. I am not complaining one bit, I truly love the summer months. If you have been a Florida resident for anytime, you know that cooling a house in the summer can take a huge bite out of your monthly budget, right? Well, this is why we have started to make a few adjustments so that our wallet doesn’t have to feel the burn. We recently partnered with Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) to implement some of their tips on how to successfully keep our energy cost down during the hottest months of the year. But that’s not all, our friends from FPL are giving one lucky Cleverly Me reader the opportunity to win an ecobee3 lite Smart Thermostat, valued at $169. Isn’t that pretty awesome? Well, I think so. So without further ado, here is our summer saving tips.

Summer Energy Savings Tips + ecobee3 lite Smart Thermostat Giveaway
Let’s start with the little things you can do to save on energy not only during summer months but also all year round. The first step to successfully keeping your energy cost in check during the summer months is to upgrade lighting. Standard incandescent light bulbs consume more energy, so by switching to LED lights, you can keep more money in your pocket. Plus, LED lights are not only more energy-efficient, they last a lot longer.
Take the cooking out of the kitchen!
Summer months are all about food and having fun with our friends and family out in the sun, so our next tip is just about that. Take the cooking out of the kitchen! So, instead of getting your kitchen hot, think about putting your grill to work for you. By preparing your meals on your grill, your kitchen will stay cool and therefore, saving you more money this summer.
Did you know that your air conditioner accounts for over 50% of your energy usage?
Ahh, the air conditioner! Yes, that little appliance we cannot live without. Did you know that your air conditioner accounts for over 50% of your energy usage? Well, since neither you or I can’t live without our air conditioner, let’s make it work less. Along time ago, I had the best advice given to me by an FPL tech. His advice was, always keep your air conditioner thermostat on auto. Besides this, if you are home, keep your air conditioner thermostat at 78 degrees and when you will be gone for more than a few hours raise the thermostat up to 82 degrees. That advised alone has helped us keep our energy consumption in check. But that’s not all we do. We also make sure to replace our air conditioner filter every 25 to 30 days to help keep our A/C unit running efficiently. And finally, we try to keep our windows shades down between noon and 3 o’clock. This way our house keeps cooler during the hottest times of the day.
One thing to note here is no matter how many adjustments you make around your house, if you don’t have a handle on how much energy you actually use on a monthly basis, those changes might not make a full impact. This why I love that FPL has an app for that. Recently FPL launched a new app that helps its customers keep tabs on their accounts at all times. With this new app, you can monitor your energy usage, view your projected bill, check your account summary, track the length of your billing cycle, pay your bill, report an outage and stay informed. I have a few like having the kids keep the curtains closed to keep the cool air in. We also cook out more to not use the oven in the heat. And I am forever having them turn off the lights after exiting a room.

Make sure to get your heater and A/C unit serviced on a yearly basis. This will help keep your units working properly. Also, Set up one charging station in your home for electronics that uses a power surge. When things are not in use turn the power surge off.
