If you follow us on Twitter and/or Instagram you might have notice that we are currently in the process of updating our outdated front yard. During our @HomeDepot #VamosAHacerlo Project we have removed all the dead shrubs, added red mulch and new edgers. During the next few weeks we will be adding planters, lighting, maybe a bench and a few other touches. In the past few weeks we have learned a few tips and tricks thanks to our local Home Depot knowledgeable staff, today I will like to share with you some of those tips.
I don’t have a green-thumb at all, in fact it seems as all my plants seem to die as soon as we get them home, of course this doesn’t mean that we have quit trying to chance things around. It seem that lately green or eco-friendly gardens are all the rage but buying all new materials can put a damper on your plans to go more natural. This got me thinking that instead of busting your budget why not instead try some recycled and re purposed materials to make your garden “green” and unique. Here are 2 Tips on Using Recycle Materials in Your Garden…
Tip #1: Seed Starter Tin Cans and Newspapers:
What do you need:
- Scissors
- Old newspapers
- Old tin cans (cleaned and dried)
- Tape or string
What do you need to do:
- Roll the newspaper to look like a toilet paper roll and tie or tape to make it stay in place.
- Cut six slits in the end the roll
- Fold the strips down and overlap them.
- Fill with wet soil, and then place in a tin can. Several can fit in one can.
- Plant one seed per roll.
- After six weeks, plant the whole thing in the garden, (minus the tine can) no transplanting required.
Tip #2: Irrigation from Plastic Bottles
What do you need:
- Scissors
- A plastic bottle
- Small hand trowel
What do you need to do:
- Cut the bottom out of your plastic bottle and remove cap.
- Dig a 6-inch-deep hole in your potted plant, as far from the plant as possible.
- Place your plastic bottle in the hole, neck down.
- Pack soil around the bottle so that it is upright.
- Fill with water. You should refill with water when it is only one-third full.
Now, let’s hear from you… Share with us some of your tips to have a successful garden.
